What are Indian Kashmir rugs?
Kashmir rugs are primarily made in Srinagar, Kashmir in north India. There is also a large production from village weavers in the surrounding areas. Kashmir carpets are highly regarded but these days production is probably not the quality one might expect. They are primarily made in pure wool, pure silk and occasionally wool and silk blends. Designs are carried over from classic Persian carpets. Political problems in the area have decimated the tourist trade. Most of the production is sold out from hotel shops by pushy rug vendors. The colours are bright and jewel like and look astonishing under the fierce spotlights. There are some really excellent Kashmir rugs but limited availability means my stock is limited the half a dozen nice pieces.
