When completed the rug weighed 22 tons. We don't stock rugs a big as this but we do have a good range of Large size rectangular rugs.
The Qaboos carpet was woven in Iran. Rectanglular rugs are also woven in Afghanistan , Turkey , India, Pakistan and China.
A hand woven rug is made up of ten of thousand and sometimes millions of individual knots. Each knot is like a pixel on a computer screen and together all the knots make up the design of the rug. The more knots that you queeze into a square centimeter the more intricate and detailed the design can be.
Before a rectangular rug is woven the design is drawn up on graph paper.
The designer has to carefully scale each of the design elements. They have to be perfectly in proportion to other elements and also in proportion to the scale of the finished rug. It's a very skilled job.
